Pilkington Recs 18 Golborne Parkside 14

7th February 2009

A LATE try by centre Andy Lyons and a stroke of good fortune helped Pilks cling to their 100 per cent league record.

Lyons slid over in the 74th minute with the score tied 14-all to give Recs a vital lead. But even then there was drama as the referee controversially disallowed a late Golborne that surely would have dent a big blow to Pilks' title hopes.

Golborne's aggressive outfit were mightily impressive and, after Recs winger Danny Davies had a try ruled out early on, the visitors' hooker Stuart Arkwright darted over from a close range.

Golborne were pegged back as an astute grubber kick by scrum half Danny Lynch was touched down by prop Richard Rafferty.

Despite the heavy conditions, Recs were not afraid to throw the ball around and full back Mark Ashton registered a try after a splendid handling move involving Nigel Pratt, Mark Rigby and Lynch. Skipper Ste Rawsthorne converted.

Golborne had a man sent to the sin bin for a foul on Lynch, however, they still managed to create an overlap to send Craig Keating in at the corner.

Recs responded though, with Pratt crashing over wide out to give them a six-point half time lead.

The second half developed into a real slog and a further Keating try and Arkwright conversion levelled the scores.

Recs upped the pressure and after being camped on the visitors' line John Rees found space to send Lyons scrambling over. With the lead only four, Golborne came again and when a kick was threaded behind Recs' line the visitors thought they had won the chase to touchdown - only for the referee to rule that Lynch had got their first.

The Commhoist man of the match went to loose forward Ste Rawsthorne while hooker Peter Cahalin was named the C&S Tyres players' player of the match.
