Leigh Central Lions 19 - 13 Pilks Recs 'A'

Pilks ‘A’ put in a battling display of rugby at Leigh Marshes against Leigh Central Lions and were unlucky not to get something out of the game. Pilks dominated the early exchanges with a good completion rate but couldn’t turn the pressure into points as the hosts put in a determined defensive display. After soaking up the Pilks pressure the Lions got a foothold in the game and started to apply pressure of there own but the Pilks defence stood firm with prop Luke Smith putting in some big shots and Ian Marren putting in a solid show in defence. The first points of the game came from a Lions drop goal when play had broken down for them on the last tackle and the half back slotted over the one pointer. The home team continued to dominate the territory and Pilks stood firm until they themselves scored the games opening try through teenage wing Kelvin Duffy after some good work from Kurtis Marsh who put Duffy in at the corner which Wilson converted to put Recs 6-1 up with half time approaching. However, not to be outdone the Lions scored a last gasp try which was converted off the touchline to give the home team a 7-6 half time lead.

The second half started very much as the 1st did with Recs dominating the early exchanges. It wasn’t long before the scores were level when young rugby union convert and Recs centre Chris Smith dropped a goal to put the scores at 7-7. Defences were still on top in this game and it was difficult to separate these 2 until Recs skipper Fairhurst capitalised on a Lions handling error and scampered in under the sticks beating 2 men on his way. Wilson converted for a scoreline of 13-7 to the Glassmen. Recs added more pressure but were unable to register anymore points with Smith missing with a drop goal attempt that would have left the Lions needing 2 scores to win the match. The Lions then rallied and scored a try in the corner which was nicely converted by the stand off to make it 13-13. The Lions were not finished though, as the number 3 who had been a constant menace all afternoon raced 50 metres for the match winning try which was also converted by the home teams stand off and making the final score 19-13 in a pulsating encounter between 2 teams who have promotion aspirations. Blockbusting prop Luke Smith was named as players MOM and lively hooker Ian Marren took the award from the oppositions coaches. Pilks ‘A’ now look forward to getting things back on track next week when Irlam Hornets visit City Road.
